THE SOLAR SYSTEM
Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)

MERCURY, VENUS, EARTH AND MARS, THESE ARE PLANETS, THEY’RE NOT STARS

JUPITER, SATURN, URANUS TOO, PLANETS OUT BEYOND THE BLUE

ONE MORE PLANET COMING UP SOON. THE VERY LAST ONE IS OLD NEPTUNE

EACH IN ORBIT, ONE BY ONE, REVOLVING ALL AROUND THE SUN

Chorus:

IT’S THE SOLAR SYSTEM, IT’S WHERE WE LIVE,

IT’S THE SOLAR SYSTEM, SO SMALL, AND YET SO BIG
GRAVITY AND CENTRIFUGAL FORCE, KEEP THESE PLANETS ON THEIR COURSE

SOME OF THEM HAVE AN ATMOSPHERE, SOME ARE CLOUDY SOME ARE CLEAR

IN THE MIDDLE IS THE SUN, SENDING LIGHT TO EVERY ONE

EACH IN ORBIT, ONE BY ONE, REVOLVING ALL AROUND THE SUN
C…….
Chorus: IT’S THE SOLAR SYSTEM…..
MERCURY, VENUS, THE EARTH SO BLUE

MARS AND JUPITER, SATURN AND URANUS,

NEPTUNE COMING IN TO VIEW

EIGHT ROUND PLANETS HERE FOR YOU.

THE FAMILY OF THE SUN
Based on THE FARMER IN THE DELL
Changed lyrics by Anise Abdula, Mr. I & unknown author
Chorus: THE FAMILY OF THE SUN, THE FAMILY OF THE SUN

THERE ARE NINE PLANETS IN THE FAMILY OF THE SUN

MERCURY IS HOT, AND MERCURY IS SMALL
IT HAS NO ATMOSPHERE IT’S JUST A ROCKY BALL

VENUS HAS THICK CLOUDS, THAT HIDE WHAT IS BELOW
THE AIR IS FOUL, THE GROUND IS HOT, ROTATING VERY SLOW

WE LOVE THE EARTH OUR HOME, IT’S OCEANS AND IT’S TREES
WE EAT IT’S FOOD, WE BREATHE IT’S AIR, SO NO POLLUTION PLEASE

MARS IS VERY RED, IT’S ALSO DRY AND COLD
SOMEDAY YOU MIGHT VISIT MARS, IF YOU ARE REALLY BOLD

GREAT JUPITER IS BIG, WE’VE STUDIED IT A LOT
WE FOUND THAT IT HAS MANY MOONS AND A BIG RED SPOT

SATURN HAS GREAT RINGS, WE WONDERED WHAT THEY WERE.
NOW WE KNOW THEY’RE ICY ROCKS, WHICH WE SEE AS A BLUR.

URANUS ROLLS ALONG, LYING ON IT’S SIDE.
A STRANGE WAY OF TRAVELING, WHAT A FUNNY RIDE.

NEPTUNE IS BRIGHT BLUE, CRISS-CROSSING WITH PLUTO,
IT HAS THE FIERCEST STORMS AND THE FASTEST WINDS THAT BLOW.

PLUTO’S LAST IN LINE, IT’S FURTHEST FROM THE SUN.
IT’S SMALL AND COLD AND ICY TOO, TO GO THERE WOULD BE FUN.

THE FAMILY OF THE SUN, THE FAMILY OF THE SUN
THERE ARE NINE PLANETS IN THE FAMILY OF THE SUN.

MILES AND MILES AWAY (Gary Huntbatch)

How far are the planets ..how farfrom the the sun

Well I’m gonna tell you one by one

Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter and Saturn

Uranus Neptune and Pluto

But we knowThough we know

That Pluto is …is no longer a planet

From the sun Mercury’s nearly 58 million K

And you might think that that’s a long way away

But Venus a 108.2 Earth almost 150

All in millions of kilometers  wow wow wowee

Mars is close to 228 million K

Jupiter 778.3 million K OK

Saturn 142.7 Uranus two thousand eight hundred and seventy

Millions of kilometers…are you hearin’ me

Well man oh man…. that’s far out

Listen, Neptune is much … much further even

Four thousand four hundred and ninety seven million

Little Pluto is so way out as out could be

Five thousand nine hundred million K

There all so many million kilometers away

Will we ever go to see them…maybe one day

If a space ship could be built that goes as fast as a wink

You could be just anywhere quicker than you could think

Do do do all far from the sun

Do do do so far from the sun

Do Do do do do do

METEORS, COMETS & ASTEROIDS
Yurgen Ilaender (MR. I) February, 2002
Chorus 1: METEORS, COMETS AND ASTEROIDS, ASTEROIDS, ASTEROIDS

METEORS, COMETS AND ASTEROIDS, FLOATING OUT IN SPACE.

Asteroid Verse:
ASTEROIDS ARE BIG ROCKS IN SPACE,

YOU’LL FIND THEM ALL OVER THE PLACE.

BETWEEN MARS AND JUPITER ESPECIALLY,

LOTS OF ASTEROIDS THERE FOR YOU TO SEE.

THE ASTEROID BELT IS WHAT IT’S CALLED.
SOME SAY IT USED TO BE A PLANET OF OLD
BUT NOW IT’S JUST ROCKS IN ROWS AND ROWS
AND THEY LOOK KIND OF FUNNY, LIKE FLOATING POTATOS
Chorus 2: ASTEROIDS, COMETS AND METEORS, METEORS, METEORS
ASTEROIDS, COMETS AND METEORS, FALLING FROM THE SKY

Meteor Verse:
YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD OF A FALLING STAR,
WELL, A FALLING STAR IS A METEOR.
TO SEE A METEOR IS A DELIGHTFUL SIGHT,
WHEN IT HITS THE EARTH IT’S CALLED A METEORITE.

IT CAN BE MADE OF IRON, OR SIMPLY ROCK
AS IT FALLS TO THE EARTH IT GETS REAL HOT
A MILLION METEORS EACH DAY DISAPPEAR
AS THEY BURN UP IN OUR ATMOSPHERE.

Chorus 3: ASTEROIDS, METEORS AND COMETS, COMETS, COMETS
ASTEROIDS, METEORS AND COMETS, VOYAGERS TO THE STARS

Comet Verse:
A COMET IS A GIANT, DIRTY SNOWBALL
WITH A FIERY TAIL, IT LOOKS BIG, BUT IT’S SMALL
THE FROZEN CORE IS CALLED THE NUCLEUS.
IT’S MADE OF WATER, ROCK , METAL, GAS AND DUST

THE COMA AND THE TAIL, CAN STRETCH FOR MILLIONS OF MILES
WHEN A COMET COMES TO VISIT IT BRINGS MILLIONS OF SMILES
EVERYONE CAN SEE A COMET, YES, YOU CAN TOO.
WATCH FOR HALEY’S COMET IN TWO THOUSAND SIXTY-TWO (2062)

GUESS I MUST BE SATURN
Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I) -inspired by Laura Egolf (Fall 2001)

I WOKE UP THIS MORNING, I WAS FEELING QUITE STRANGE

I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR, SOMETHING HAD CHANGED.

THERE WERE RINGS ON MY FINGERS, RINGS ON MY TOES

AND A GREAT BIG HONKIN’ RING IN MY NOSE.

THERE WERE RINGS IN MY EYEBROWS, RINGS IN MY EARS,
I STARTED TO CRY, THERE WERE RINGS IN MY TEARS
THERE WERE RINGS ON MY BODY, ALL UP AND DOWN
I LOOKED IN THE MIRROR AND I SAID WITH A FROWN.
Chorus:
I GUESS I MUST BE SATURN, I’M A PLANET IN THE SKY

I HAVE RINGS ALL AROUND ME, I JUST DON’T KNOW WHY.

I GUESS I MUST BE SATURN, FUNNY HOW IT GOES.

RINGS ALL AROUND MY BODY, FROM MY HEAD TO MY TOES.
I WAITED TILL EVENING WITH A FEELING OF HOPE
I LOOKED THROUGH THE LENS OF MY OLD TELESCOPE
OUT PAST JUPITER, SO HOPEFULLY,
BUT I COULDN’T FIND SATURN, I GUESS SATURN IS ME.
I AM NINETY- FIVE TIMES BIGGER THAN THE EARTH
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY THOUSAND KILOMETERS IN DIAMETER
ONE A HALF MILLION KILOMETERS AWAY FROM THE SUN
IT WILL TAKE ALMOST THIRTY YEARS, BEFORE I TURN ONE.

Chorus: (End with ‘EVEN IN MY NOSE’)

Talking part: OH NO! I’M NOT GOING TO HAVE VERY MANY BIRTHDAYS
THIS MAKES ME SO UNHAPPY. ON EARTH, I’D BE TURNING 90 YEARS OLD,
BUT ON SATURN I WOULD ONLY BE THREE.
I STARTED TO TREMBLE, I STARTED TO SCREAM
MY MOM WOKE ME UP AND SAID, YOU’RE HAVING A BAD DREAM
I LOOKED IN THE FACE OF MY MOM AND HEARD HER SAY
GOOD MORNING, DEAR SWEETIE, AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I WAS ME, I WAS ME, I’M NOT SATURN ANYMORE, I’M ME, I’M ME

TODAY IS MY BIRTHDAY, AND I’M TURNING FOUR.
sing: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME, HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME,
I’M SURE GLAD I’M NOT SATURN, IF I WAS I’D BE 90

I say I say:
ACTUALLY, AREN’T YOU FOUR NOW? (OH, YES, I’M FOUR YEARS OLD, not three)

WELL, ON SATURN IT TAKES NEARLY 30 YEARS TO GO ONCE AROUND THE SUN
SO, 30 TIMES 4 IS 120. (120, WOW! THAT’S PRETTY OLD ISN’T IT?)

DO YOU THINK THEY’D LET ME INTO KINDERGARTEN NEXT YEAR EVEN THOUGH I’M 120 YEARS OLD? Well, by then you’d be 150.
DO THEY HAVE KINDERGARTEN ON SATURN?

WHAT AM I GONNA DO WITH ALL THESE RINGS?

QUESTIONS ABOUT SPACE (Gary Q)

SPACE

Gary

When you say ‘outer space’ ……………Just what do you mean

How much space is there……….. …….and what is in between

Where does it end ..………………..……but does it even begin

I just can’t figure it out.….…………My head is starting to spin

Gary

If there’s really nothing out there ……….between Earth and Mars

What stops the planets flying apart……or crashing into the stars

If it is just a black space………………….all dark and not too bright

When rockets leave earth…why don’t they drop right out of sight

Mr I

It’s magnetism Gary…………….…….out there in darkest space

Invisible lines of energy……………that keep everything in place

Yes space is filled with electrons,,,…but you’ll need a microscope

To see what fills the blackness……that you can’t clean with soap

JUPITER
Gary Huntbatch

Chorus: JUPITER, JUPITER, BIGGEST OF THE PLANETS

JUPITER, JUPITER, BIGGEST BY FAR.

NEARLY NINETY THOUSAND MILES, IN DIAMETER,

BIG ENOUGH TO FIT, ONE THOUSAND EARTHS IN THERE

JUPITER HAS SIXTEEN ORBITING MOONS

PARTICLES OF DUST AND ROCK, MAKE UP IT’S RINGS

Chorus

IT TAKES TWELVE YEARS, TO ORBIT THE SUN

IT SPINS SO FAST THAT IN TEN HOURS A DAY IS DONE

MADE OF HYDROGEN AND HELIUM, LIKE A TINY SUN

BUT IT’S NOT QUITE BIG ENOUGH, TO BURN LIKE ONE.

NOT SOLID LIKE OUR EARTH, ONLY GASES IT’S MADE OF

WITH ORANGE, RED, BLUE AND WHITE CLOUDS CIRCLING ABOVE.

A BIG RED SPOT OF SWIRLING WINDS WITH LOTS OF POWER.

SPINNING VERY FAST AT FOUR HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR.

Chorus

In July of 1994 a comet named SHOEMAKER-LEVY 9 crashed into Jupiter
Causing a huge, spectacular explosion.

JUPITER, JUPITER, BIGGEST OF THE PLANETS
JUPITER, JUPITER, BIGGEST BY FAR.

IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN
Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I) January 2002
Chorus: IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN, OO, OO , OO

IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN , OO, OO, OO,

IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN, AH, AH AH,

IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN, AH, AH, AH,
IT SHINES ON US, EVERYDAY, HELPS US ALL, ALONG THE WAY,

WITHOUT THE SUN, THERE WOULD BE NO LIFE,

PLANTS AND ANIMALS, PEOPLE TOO, RELY ON THE SUN FOR ALL THEY DO

IT GIVES US FOOD, WIND, HEAT AND LIGHT,
EVEN THE RAIN, IS BECAUSE OF THE SUN,

THE GRASS ON THE PLAIN, IS BECAUSE OF THE SUN
Verse 2:
ABOUT 5 BILLION YEARS AGO, OUR SPECIAL SUN WAS BORN YOU KNOW,

A GLOBE WAS FORMED, FROM GAS AND DUST

NUCLEAR EXPLOSIONS OF HYDROGEN GAS,

FOUR MILLION TONS WITH EACH SECOND TO PASS,

RELEASING TONS AND TONS OF HELIUM

IT TAKES ONE MILLION YEARS, FOR THESE HELIUM GASES

TO COME FROM THE CORE, AND REACH THE SUN’S SURFACE
THROUGH THE RADIOACTIVE ZONE, THROUGH THE CONVECTIVE ZONE
TO THE PHOTOSHPERE AND BEYOND,
Chorus : IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN………
Talking part:

The sun is so big, over one million of our planet Earths would fit inside the sun. In fact, it is nearly 600 times bigger than all the planets in the solar system put together.
It’s gravity is 28 times stronger than here on earth. You would weigh 28 time heavier if you stood on the sun. Of course, you can’t stand on the sun; you would burn up instantly. The surface is made up of fiery gases, like boiling lava. Above the PHOTOSPHERE, the surface of the sun, is the CHROMOSHPERE , a layer of gas around the sun close to the surface. Above this shines the CORONA. You can see this outer layer of very hot gas during a solar eclipse.
Also, on the sun’s surface are SUNSPOTS. These are cooler spots on the sun’s surface that send out powerful bursts of electricity. Gases shooting out from these sunspots and looping back to the photoshpere are called PROMINENCES.
FLARES also shoot out from these sunspots. Flares are violent magnetic explosions that send radioactive particles out into space. When these particles reach the earth they sparkle as they become trapped in the earth’s magnetic fields at the north and south poles. We see them as the northern and southern lights.
The sun is 150 million kilometers from earth. It takes only 8 seconds for light from the sun to reach us. The sun will shine for another 5 billion years.

Chorus: IN THE CENTER IS THE SUN………..

SPACE ODDITY
Totally Gary Huntbatch
This is a true story that I’m going to tell to you
Of when I walked through the forest one sunny afternoon.
Upon approaching a clearing, well my heart did a flip.
‘Cause there in the middle was a small red spaceship

It must have just landed, someone opened up the door
Then out popped a ladder and I looked to see more.
When to my surprise I saw two little blue men.
Or they could have been women as I couldn’t quite see them.

When they had walked away to look around a bit, I’ll bet
I crept towards their spaceship for a better view yet,
Although small on the outside, about like a car.
It was huge on the inside, yes, bigger by far.

Whoever built it must have been very very smart
Then I pushed a yellow button and the engine it did start
The door closed so quick that it gave me quite a scare
So I sat myself down in a great big comfy chair.

It took off at great speed through our solar system
Straight through our belt of asteroids, I don’t know how it missed them
To Pluto, Uranus, not forgetting Neptune.
Then Jupiter and Mars and flew some rings around Saturn.

It zoomed to Mercury and Venus took a whirl round the sun.
And then came back to Earth where our adventure had begun.
As it landed in the clearing that we’d taken off form.
I looked out of the window and said, It’ s good to be home.

I stepped out of the space ship just a little bit dazed.
And to this very day I am still quite amazed.
That in such a short time I was like an astronaut
In a tiny huge, space ship, glad I didn’t get caught

Just then the blue people arrived back at their spaceship.
They climbed in, closed the door and took off very quick.
I hope they got home safe and that no problems came to pass
Because I may have used up just a little too much gas!

SOMETIMES, I WONDER WHY
Anise Abdula and Yurgen Ilaender (Mr. I)

SOMETIMES I WONDER WHY, THERE ARE STARS UP IN THE SKY

AND SOMETIME I HEAR THEM CALLING, CALLING ME HOME

LITTLE SPECKS OF LIGHT, DANCING IN THE NIGHT,

AND I CAN HEAR THEM CALLING, CALLING ME HOME.
THE SUN GOES DOWN, WITHOUT A SOUND

THE EARTH KEEPS TURNING ROUND AND ROUND

THE PLANETS SPIN, THE STARS SHOOT BY,

I THINK IT’S SO, BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY?
THE CLOUDS BRING RAIN AND SNOW AND SLEET
THE WIND BRINGS STORMS WITH COLD AND HEAT
THE SEED MAKES TREES, THAT GROW UP HIGH
I THINK IT’S SO, BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY
THE LIZARD CRAWLS, THE CAMEL WALKS

THE NIGHT OWL HOOTS, THE PARROT TALKS

THE MOLE DIGS DEEP, AND EAGLES FLY,

I THINK IT’S SO, BUT I DON’T KNOW WHY.
SOMETIMES, I WONDER WHY, THERE ARE STARS UP IN THE SKY
AND SOMETIMES I HEAR THEM CALLING, CALLING ME HOME
LITTLE SPECKS OF LIGHT, DANCING IN THE NIGHT
I CAN HEAR THEM CALLING, CALLING ME HOME
I CAN HEAR THEM CALLING, CALLING ME HOME.
